The other was at Dartmouth College, where undergraduates learned how to write programs on a campus-wide computing network. One was the Logo project centered at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, which focused on exposing elementary-age kids to computing. In 1978 Andrew Molnar, an expert at the National Science Foundation, argued that what he termed computer literacy was “a prerequisite to effective participation in an information society and as much a social obligation as reading literacy.” Molnar pointed as models to two programs that had originated in the 1960s. ![]() This enthusiasm for coding is nothing new. More and more jobs, they suggest, will require “ some kind of computer science knowledge.” Advocates for such policies contend that they expand educational and economic opportunities for students. If lawmakers enact that curriculum change, they will be following in the footsteps of five other states with similar policies that consider coding and computer education foundational to a well-rounded education: Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Nebraska. Now, in 2023, North Carolina is considering making coding a high school graduation requirement. Some may choose to start their children even younger, with the Baby Code! series of board books-because “it’s never too early to get little ones interested in computer coding.” Riding this wave of enthusiasm, in 2016 President Barack Obama launched an initiative called Computer Science for All, proposing billions of dollars in funding to arm students with the “computational thinking skills they need” to “thrive in a digital economy.” Parents can now consider top-10 lists of coding summer camps for kids. The Schools are a division of Cranbrook Educational Community, which includes also Cranbrook’s Academy of Art, Art Museum, Institute of Science, and other affiliated cultural and educational programs.A decade ago, tech powerhouses the likes of Microsoft, Google, and Amazon helped boost the nonprofit, a learn-to-code program with a vision: “That every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer science as part of their core K–12 education.” It was followed by a wave of nonprofits and for-profits alike dedicated to coding and learning computer science some of the many others include Codecademy, Treehouse, Girl Develop It, and Hackbright Academy (not to mention Girls Who Code, founded the year before and promising participants, “Learn to code and change the world”). ![]() Since then, students at Cranbrook have used the process to complete math problems, learn about different parts of the country, design a new kind of backpack, and build roller coasters.Ī series of MIT-led workshops are taking place over the course of this year and in 2017.Ĭranbrook will also utilize a hands-on kit developed by MIT to teach DNA and proteins in cell biology.Ĭranbrook is the first school in the Midwest to form an educational collaboration with the Edgerton Center, and the third in the nation.Įstablished in 1992, the Edgerton Center focuses on hands-on learning programs for engineering and imaging for students and professionals, the international-development program D-Lab, student-run clubs and teams, student machine shops, and a year-round K–12 science and engineering outreach program.Ĭranbrook Schools is college-preparatory learning environment, comprised of Brookside, (Pre-K through grade five) Cranbrook Kingswood Girls Middle School and Boys Middle School, (grades six through eight) and Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School, (grades nine through 12 with day and boarding programs). Prior to the official announcement of the collaboration, 70 faculty members at Cranbrook engaged in a workshop this past summer on integrating the design thinking process - a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems - into their curriculum. “This collaboration is truly a milestone in our approach to experiential learning, with one of the most innovative schools in the country.” “For more than a century, Cranbrook has been dedicated to breaking new ground in education,” says Arlyce M. As part of the collaboration, Cranbrook will also serve as a testing site for the Edgerton Center with the potential to change the way K-12 curriculum is developed nationally. ![]()
